Caption: Illustration of the praying effigies of Sir Robert and Lady Margaret Harcourt, atop a simplified - and, as the description rightly notes, incorrect - illustration of the armorial bearings on the side of the tomb Title of Work: THIS PLATE represents the Tomb of Sir Robert Harcourt, Knight of the Garter, and of his Lady, Margaret, daughter of Sir John Byron, of Clayton, in Lancashire, and relict of Sir William Atherton, of Atherton, in the same County. Sir Robert died Novr. 14, 1471, and was buried, together with his Lady, at Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire. The Shield encircled by the Garter, contains the Arms of Harcourt and Byron, the latter not quite correctly sculptured; and the plain Shield exhibits the Coat of Harcourt, impaled with that of Stanton, in allusion, doubtless, to the acquisition of the estate of Stanton, since called Stanton Harcourt, by the marriage of Robert de Harcourt, in the 12th. century, with the heir of Camville, whose Mother received the Lordship of Stanton, in gift on that occasion, from her Cousin, Adeliza, second Queen to Henry I Shelfmark: Maps K.Top.35.54.b Author: Wilkinson, Robert Place and date of production: 1813 Credit: From the British Library archiveLooking for a printed copy of this image?
